Logistics Cluster Special Operation (SO)
– Gaza
Since its activation by the Humanitarian Country
Team in December 2008, the Logistics Cluster – with WFP as a lead agency supported
by UNRWA – has been active in coordination and facilitating the passage of goods
to Gaza through sharing logistics information and expertise between agencies and
providing a goods transport service of “last resort”.
The role of the Logistics Cluster:
• Ensure participation of all key humanitarian partners in the logistics operation
planning.
• Establish and maintain appropriate humanitarian coordination mechanisms.
• Ensure the complementarity of different humanitarian actors actions.
• Coordinate with national/local authorities/state institutions/local civil society/UN/NGO's & other relevant actors
To date, the SO has provided the humanitarian
community with a logistics set up and platform for the effective coordination of
humanitarian relief and has ensured a timely and valuable dissemination of relevant
logistics information to the humanitarian community. While there was initially a
pipeline set up from Egypt, the main corridor for goods access is from Israel to
Gaza through Karem Shalom.
